This volume presents the field of protest and liberation literature, drawn from authors and events in the 19th and 20th century. Original critical chapters on a diverse collection of American and international writers highlight harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, George Orwell, the Russian novelist Yevgeny Zamyatin, and many others. While the texts and historical events covered here are fairly well known, they are not usually examined as part of a tradition of protest literature. A diverse geographical, cultural, and historical field of study, drawn together by their related set of approaches for conveying socially progressive ideas to readers in an emotionally compelling, consciousness-altering way.
